 CAST IRON SLEEVE INSTALLATION
                             Procedure For Installing A Cast Iron Sleeve 
                                         In The Aluminum Vega Engine

BLOCK PREPARATION:

Before fitting the block with sleeves, the top surface of the block must be checked for warpage or shrink between the inner wall surfaces and outside edge of the deck.  Scrape the gasket surface clean and place a straight edge across each siamese section as illustrated in Figure 1.  If a .003 feeler stock can be inserted under the straight edge, the block must be resurfaced.
 
CYLINDER HEAD PREPARATION:

The cylinder head must be checked with a straight edge in the same manner as shown in Figure 1 and be resurfaced if a .003 feeler stock can be inserted beneath the straight edge. 

When the preliminary work is completed, proceed as follows:

     A.   Before boring the block, you must find the actual O.D. of the sleeve.Measure the sleeve O.D. with a micrometer in three places 120^ apart near top and bottom.  Add all six readings together and divide by six.  This will give you the actual O.D. from which to figure boring size in block.

     B.   Bore block same size as sleeve and hone out block .001; to .0015 (one to one and one-half thousandths) larger than actual sleeve O.D.  Use honing stones such as MM-33-J63 for hand hone and C30-A53 for CK-10 automatic hone.

     C.   Proceed to machine the counterbore diameter as shown in Figure 2. To avoid possible interference with the  sleeve undercut fillet, the top corner of the broe must be chamfered .005 to .010 X 45^.

     D.   You should now be able to insert up to 3/4 of the sleeve by hand push for slip fit.  Tap sleeve gently with a rawhide mallet orplastic hammer to settle it
          down into final position.  Extra honing of the I.D. is unnecessary as the sleeve is completely finished at the factory.  After installation, the sleeve flange should project from .002 to .003 above the top of the block. Dimensions are determined by the sleeve used.

 USE OF ANTI-SEIZE COMPOUND ON ALUMINUM THREADS
   Anti-Seize Compound Recommended For Aluminum Engine Blocks

When working on Vega or other aluminum engines, shop personnel
are reminded that a;ll tapped holes in blocks have aluminum
threads.  There is always a chance that when removing steel bolts
from aluminum, automotive technicians can pull aluminum threads
out of the holes.

Some employees are urged to use anti-seize compound on cylinder
headof main bearing cap bolts.  These bolts have high torqued
specifications, and therefore, have a greater tendency to lock
onto the aluminum threads.

It is a recommended procedure to use anit-seize compound on any
steel inserted into aluminum threads.
