6.3, 6.7 & 7.0L (390, 410 & 428 CID) Engines
It has been reported that rocker arm shaft support bolt holes in the cylinder heads of some 6.3, 6.7 and 7.0L (390, 410 and 428 CID) Ford Motor Co. engines may be drilled deep enough to enter the intake manifold ports. Because the rocker arm support bolts are under full oil pressure from the rocker arm shaft, oil may seep past the threads, enter the manifold ports and cause excess
oil consumption, spark plug fouling and exhaust smoking.
To determine this condition, check the bolt holes carefully. When air pressure is applied to the bolt holes, if the hole is found to be drilled through, the bolts must be replaced with a stud of new design.
For heads with countersunk holes use bolt No. 372351-S. For chamfered holes use bolt No. 372350-S. Use nut No. 354128-S with both new bolts. Coat stud threads with an oil resistant sealer prior to installation and torque the nut at 40 to 45 ft. lbs.
Warning: Do not attempt to correct the problem by coating the existing cap screws with any type sealer as this would be only a temporary repair.

Specifications listed for S (Step) type flywheels refer to the height of the wear surface above the pressure plate mounting surface. Specifications for C (Cup) type flywheels refer to the height of the pressure plate mounting surface above the wear surface. F (Flat) type flywheels have the same height specification for the wear and pressure plate mounting surface.

5.0L EFI Ford Engines
AERA members report excessive oil consumption on Ford 5.0L EFI engines. This condition has been reported on both existing engines as well as engines that have been recently rebuilt.
One very common source of oil consumption has been through the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system. As the first step, verifying that the correct parts are used and are in good working order. For most applications, the crankcase vacuum should be one to three inches of mercury (1 - 3 hg).
If the PCV system is working properly, check the rocker cover for a loose or deformed baffle. The baffle is located in the right valve cover, directly under the PCV valve and may allow oil to collect in a puddle. High vacuum will then pull the oil into the system. Secure or reform the baffle to prevent oil from
collecting under the PCV valve.
