HEAD GASKET SELECTION FOR 1.9L DIESEL
                                                 Head Gasket Selection For
                                      1982-99 Peugeot 1.9L XUD9 Diesel Engines

The AERA Technical Committee offers the following information for the head gasket selection for the 1982-99 Peugeot XUD9 diesel engines. This information should be considered anytime head gasket replacement is occurring.

Four different head gasket thickness options are currently available and they replace all previous head gasket selections. These gaskets provide a greater variety of gasket thickness options to choose from. Selecting the correct replacement head gasket will ensure proper engine specifications are maintained during engine repairs.

Selecting a replacement head gasket requires measuring the amount of piston protrusion above the deck of the block. After determining the piston height, select the appropriate replacement gasket from the chart below. The gaskets are further identified by a different number of notches on one end of each gasket.

Note: The charts in the original service manuals are no longer valid.

Part # Piston Protrusion Gasket thickness Notches

Add this chart to older Peugeot service and overhaul manuals (if applicable) and this information should also be used on Toro Reelmaster® 335-D/3500-D and Groundsmaster® 455-D units.

CYLINDER LINER REPLACEMENT CAUTION FOR I-6 GM ENGINES
Cylinder Liner Replacement Caution For
 2002-2005 GM 2.8, 3.5 & 4.2L VIN 8, 6 & S Engines

The AERA Technical Committee offers the following cylinder liner replacement caution for 2002-2005 GM 2.8, 3.5 & 4.2L VIN 8, 6 & S engines. This information should be considered anytime cylinder sleeve replacement is being considered. This repair is also possible within the vehicles engine compartment.

The procedures to remove and install cylinder liners correctly for the engines listed above require special tooling available from GMSPO. Below find the basic installation instructions according to GM. Note that some of the procedures indicated may differ from acceptable procedures used for other engines.

Exceptional cleanliness precautions must be taken if this procedure is to be used while the engine is installed in the vehicle. Liner installed height may require adjustment by cutting the top of the liner with the trim tool assembly EN 45680-411available from GM. Additional tools are also required for proper in-vehicle procedures as shown below.

Cylinder Bore Liner Installation Cautions:
Note: Do not use assembly aids or lubricants on the cylinder bore liner or the cylinder bore block when installing a new cylinder bore liner, or engine damage will occur. These items will not aid in the installation of the new cylinder bore liner.

Note: Do not chill or heat the cylinder bore liner or the cylinder block when removing or installing a new cylinder bore liner. Chilling or heating the cylinder bore liner or the cylinder block will cause engine damage and will not aid the removal or installation of the new cylinder bore liner.
Note: Do not use any air powered or electric tools to rotate the threaded shaft of the fixture EN 45680401/cylinder bore liner installer EN 45680403 assembly or damage to the cylinder bore liner will occur.

1.	Place the NEW cylinder bore liner (117) onto the cylinder block.
2.	Install fixture EN 45680-401/cylinder bore liner installer EN 45680-403 assembly (1) which is part of EN 45680-400, over the cylinder bore liner (117) and onto the cylinder block. Do not apply downward pressure to the cylinder bore liner (117).
3.	Important: Use 4 old cylinder head bolts for the attaching bolts. Insert the 4 attachment bolts into the legs of the fixture EN 45680-401 (1). Note: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
4.	Tighten the 4 attachment bolts. Do not apply downward pressure to the cylinder bore liner (117).
5.	Tighten the 4 attachment bolts to 15 N.m (11 lb ft).
6.	Position the new liner and align the bottom (117) with the cylinder bore of the block bore.
7.	Align the installation arbor (1) onto the top of the cylinder bore liner (117).
8.	Align the pusher block of cylinder bore liner installer EN 45680-403 into the groove of fixture EN 45680-401 (1).

Note: Do not use any air powered or electric tools to rotate the threaded shaft of the fixture EN 45680401/cylinder bore liner installer EN 45680403 assembly or damage to the cylinder bore liner will occur.

9.	Using a ratchet, rotate the threaded shaft of fixture EN 45680-401/cylinder bore liner installer EN 45680-403 assembly (1) in order to install the cylinder bore liner (117) into the engine block.
10.	Do not completely seat the cylinder bore liner in the block. Leave approximately 1/16 inch (1.6 mm) of the cylinder bore liner above the surface of the cylinder block.
11.	Using a torque wrench, torque the threaded shaft of the fixture EN 45680-401/cylinder bore liner installer EN 45680-403 assembly to 102 N.m (75 lb ft) in order to completely seat the cylinder bore liner in the cylinder block. With the cylinder bore liner properly installed, a minimal portion of the cylinder bore liner flange will protrude above the block deck surface.
12.	Remove the fixture EN 45680-401/cylinder bore liner installer EN 45680-403 assembly (1) from the cylinder block.

After all liners to be replaced have been installed, the top must be cut down to the proper height. Important: Before using trim tool assembly EN 45680-411, the height of the cutting blades must be set to the proper specification. The proper specification is that the cylinder bore liner flange must be flush to +0.02 mm (.0008 in) above the block deck surface.

Extreme care must be used while removing any remaining metal shavings from the engine and bores as the smallest piece of debris may lead to future engine damage.

                                                                   The AERA Technical Committee
