Crankshaft Journal Sizes For
VW 2.1L Waterboxer Engines
Volkswagen has manufactured the 2.1L waterboxer engines used in the Vanagon with two differently dimensioned crankshafts.
The difference is in the main bearing journal size. According to VW, the crankshafts can be identified by either a blue or red ink dot. Unfortunately these markings are usually long gone by the time the engine needs to be remanufactured. This crankshaft does not have any forging numbers on it, adding to the identification confusion.
Use the chart below to select the proper journal sizes and bearings for standard crankshafts:

At the present time, aftermarket main bearings are only available for the blue dot crankshaft. For some time most aftermarket service manuals have been listing the incorrect dimensions for the #2 and 3 main journal.

Automotive Applications
The AERA Technical Committee suggest referring to the following
specification chart when resurfacing flywheels.
Specifications listed for S (Step) type flywheels refer to the height of the wear surface above the pressure plate mounting surface. Specifications for C (Cup) type flywheels refer to the height of the pressure plate mounting surface above the wear surface. F (Flat) type flywheels have the same height specification for the wear and pressure plate mounting surface.
